Drywall finishing and repair work by Worthy Finishes in Lansing Michigan

Painting looks like the easiest home project there is. A roller, some tape, a free weekend.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it turns into three weekends, a patched wall that shows through, and a call to a painter anyway.

This is an honest look at when DIY makes sense, when it does not, and what to look for if you decide to hire.

When painting it yourself makes sense

DIY is a good call when:

  • It is one room, or two, with standard-height walls.
  • The walls are in good shape and the color change is small.
  • Perfect lines are not the point, like a basement, a garage, or a spare room.
  • You have the time and you enjoy it. Some people find it relaxing. That counts.

If that sounds like your project, go for it. You will save money and you will get to say you did it yourself.

When hiring is the better call

Hiring makes sense when:

  • The walls need repair first. Cracks, water stains, old patches, and nail holes need to be fixed and primed before paint, or they show through.
  • The ceilings are high, or there are stairs or a tall entryway. Ladders get tricky and slow. Painting from a ladder is also where homeowners get hurt.
  • You are changing to a very different color. That means primer and extra coats.
  • You want crisp lines where the wall meets the ceiling and the trim. This is the detail most DIY jobs miss.
  • You are painting most of the house. Taping, patching, painting, and cleanup add up to a lot of weekends.

Repairs are the clearest example. One of our customers put it this way:

"Gabe and his team did a wonderful job repairing some drywall and doing some interior painting for us. From the time we called for a quote, until the job was completed, communication was amazing…"

Repairing and painting in one visit saved that homeowner from finding a drywall person, then a painter, then trying to schedule both. If your walls need work, the repair is part of the paint job. It is not a separate project. Our crew handles drywall finishing and repair too.

The real cost of DIY

DIY is not free.

Supplies add up. Paint, primer, rollers, brushes, tape, drop cloths, patching supplies, and a ladder.

Your time counts. A room our crew finishes in a day can take a first-timer a long weekend.

The expensive mistake is the redo. Roller marks that show in afternoon light. Edges that wobble. Patches that were never primed and show through the finish. Fixing a bad job costs more than doing it right once.

Our crew typically finishes an interior project in three to seven days, depending on the size of the home and the number of rooms.

How to choose a painter

If you decide to hire, here is what to look for. These apply to us and to anyone you are comparing us with.

  1. A written, itemized quote. Rooms, surfaces, prep, number of coats, and the exact paint. A single number with nothing under it is a warning sign.
  2. Proof of insurance. Ask for liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers' comp. A good painter sends it without a fuss.
  3. Who actually does the work. Ask if it is their own crew or subcontractors. The person who quotes your job should be the person on the ladder.
  4. The paint, by brand and line. "Good paint" is not an answer.
  5. A plan for prep and protection. How they cover floors and furniture, how they handle repairs, how they clean up each day. Prep is where a paint job is won or lost, and a good painter will explain it. As another customer said:
"Gabriel and his team deliver an exceptional product. He explained every step of the process… Prep work was amazingly impressive."

  6. A start date and an end date. And what happens if the schedule changes.
  7. Recent local reviews. Read what people say about communication and cleanliness, not just the finished color.
  8. A fair deposit. A big payment up front, before any work, is worth asking about.

A low number usually leaves something out. If one quote is far below the others, ask what is different. It might be fewer coats, less prep, a lower-grade paint, or no cleanup. Those shortcuts show up in a few months, and then you pay a second painter to fix the first one.

How we work at Worthy Finishes

Worthy Finishes is a family-owned company with an in-house crew. No subcontractors. The people who quote your job are the people who paint it, and our customers know Seth, Han, Bryan, and Ryan by name.

We move furniture to the center of the room and cover it. We protect your floors and fixtures. We show up when we said we would, and we tell you what is happening before you have to ask. When we finish, we walk through the home with you, and we leave it cleaner than we found it.

That is how we hold a 5.0 across 102 Google reviews.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to paint it myself?

On supplies alone, usually. Once you add your time, the tools, and the chance of a redo, the gap gets smaller, especially on large rooms, tall walls, or big color changes.

What is the hardest part of painting a room?

Prep and clean lines. Most of the finished look comes from the patching, sanding, and taping done before the first coat.

Do I need to move my furniture if I hire a painter?

No. We move furniture to the center of the room and cover it with protective plastic. We also protect floors and fixtures.

How long does it take to get the job done?

After the quote, most interior projects take three to seven days, depending on the size of your home and the number of rooms.

What if my walls need repairs?

Small repairs are part of normal prep. Larger drywall damage is quoted separately, and our crew can handle it.

How do I know a painting quote is fair?

Compare itemized quotes. A fair one lists the rooms, the surfaces, the prep, the coats, and the paint. If you cannot tell what is included, ask.

Want a second opinion on your project?

Not sure whether it is a DIY job or one for a crew? We will come out, walk your rooms, and tell you honestly. If it is something you can handle, we will say so. If you want a written quote, it is free, and there is no pressure.
